About this tour

Elsen Tasarkhai, nestled within the Mongol Els sand dunes, extends 80 km long and 5 km wide across Uvurkhangai province. Situated 280 km west of Ulaanbaatar and 80 km east of Karakorum, this area boasts a unique blend of sand dunes, hills adorned with rare bushes, and a small forest by a river. Locally known as Duut mankhan (Singing sand), it offers opportunities to experience nomadic life in traditional Mongolian gers, camel rides, and serene walks amidst stunning nature. Wildlife such as Maral stag (elk), wolves, deer, and foxes populate the area. Elsen Tasarkhai, meaning “an isolated torn-off piece of sand,” offers a glimpse of real desert amidst lush green steppes. Visitors can conveniently combine their trip with a visit to Khogno Khan Mountain, just 18 km north, to explore the ruins of Erdene Khamba Monastery. Tourist camps provide horse and camel rides, making this destination easily accessible within a day’s drive from Ulaanbaatar.

Hustai National Park, also known as Khustain Nuruu National Park, lies in the Khustai Mountains of Mongolia’s Töv Province. It’s famous for being the habitat of the Mongolian wild horse, the takhi, which was reintroduced to the area in the 1990s after becoming extinct in the wild. The park, designated in 1993, hosts around 300 takhi. Visitors can enjoy observing these horses in their natural environment and stay in a modern ger camp at the park’s entrance, offering comfortable lodging and meals. The park is also home to a diverse array of wildlife, including 55 mammal species.

Terelj National Park in Mongolia is a picturesque expanse of rugged terrain, lush forests, and granite rock formations, situated just 80 kilometers northeast of Ulaanbaatar. It’s famed for its stunning natural beauty, offering visitors opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and camping amidst breathtaking landscapes. The park is home to iconic attractions like Turtle Rock and the Aryabal Meditation Temple, providing cultural and spiritual experiences amidst nature’s grandeur. Terelj National Park is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists seeking tranquility and adventure in Mongolia’s scenic wilderness.

Itinerary

Today, the Zaya team escorts you to the Mini Gobi, presenting an opportunity to immerse yourself in the essence of the Gobi Desert. Our accommodations will be at Mr. Sunduu's guest ger. This afternoon, prepare for an exhilarating ride on a Bactrian camel followed by a hike through the sand dunes to absorb the stunning landscapes. Later in the day, our host family will introduce you to the nomadic lifestyle, offering insights into their daily lives and allowing you to savor traditional Mongolian cuisine. Witness the care nomadic herdsmen and their families extend to their goats, sheep, and horses, providing a glimpse into their simple yet fulfilling way of life in this tranquil region.

Welcome the day with the sunrise and embark on a journey to Khustai National Park, which is only a short drive away. Following a stay in Mr. Sunduu's guest ger, we'll settle into a tourist camp within Khustai National Park for the night. This UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve offers a rare glimpse into the realm of wild animals and pristine nature. Notably, it's the sanctuary for the Takhi (Przewalski's horse), the planet's sole surviving species of truly wild horses.

This expedition is especially appealing to photography enthusiasts, offering countless opportunities to capture the beauty of wild horses, diverse bird species, and deer in their natural habitat. We encourage you to venture out for a hillside hike at dusk—an experience that promises not only breathtaking views but also the chance to observe these majestic wild horses roaming freely, untamed and unconfined. Allow the simplicity and beauty of this scene to nourish your soul.

Your captivating journey in Mongolia proceeds to the breathtaking Terelj National Park, featuring visits to iconic sites such as the Chinggis Khan monument, Turtle Rock, and Ariybal Monastery, alongside an opportunity for horseback riding.

Upon arrival, you'll check into the Bayan Mongol tourist camp and settle into your cozy Mongolian ger before lunch. Prepare to be amazed by the world’s largest equestrian statue. This imposing figure not only doubles the height of the former record holder in Uruguay but also houses an archaeological museum at its base for visitors to explore.

Our journey continues along the Tuul River to the astonishing Turtle Rock, a 24-meter-high granite formation resembling a turtle, offering an unparalleled photography opportunity amidst the pine-covered foothills.

The day’s exploration culminates at the serene Aryaval Meditation Center, inaugurated in the summer of 2016. Nestled on a larch and granite-covered hillside in Terelj National Park, this meditation center is a sanctuary of peace, symbolized by its bridge leading to wisdom, 108 natural stone steps, and 108 surrounding stupas.

As the day winds down, we'll return to our tourist camp for a quiet dinner, followed by a few hours of horseback riding in the evening, allowing for a tranquil end to a day filled with discovery and adventure.
